SHODO & MEDITATION

EXPLORING MEDITATION AND SHODO TO GO BEYOND OUR BEST TOGETHER

Saiso Shimada Zen and Qigong (Kikou)

As far as Zen is concerned, from what I understood (my Japanese is very basic) Saiso Shimada learned Zen from a Jesuit — from a school founded by Hugo Enomiya-Lassale.

Zen Center

According to some articles, the founder of the place Hugo Enomiya-Lassalle was present and suffered from the Hiroshima atomic bomb in WWII.  After that, he engaged himself in a mission of peace and built a Catholic church “Memorial Cathedral for World Peace” in Hiroshima.

He became later known as a first person who introduced meditation to many Catholics.  Enomiya-Lassalle first built a center for meditation in “Shinmeikutsu” Hiroshima and now as I understand it, it has moved to Tokyo. Due to many notable achievements,  Enomiya-Lassalle became an honorary citizen of Hiroshima.

SHIMADA PRACTICES TODAY RAJA YOGA (SAMYAMA) AND ALSO DEEP MEDITATION IN A VISIONARY LEADER PROGRAM WITH NATHALIE ISHIZUKA

For the last two and half years, Saiso Shimada in Tokyo, along with Nathalie Ishizuka in Singapore, and a formidable raja yoga teacher in Europe (prefers to remain unknown), practices together samyama (stillness in action) co-ordinating their meditations with skype.  Due to this regular practice together Shimada has seen according to her own assessment and her fans, a shift in her work.

ABOUT VISIONARY LEADER PROGRAM

Most recently, a book has been published this Fall 2018 celebrating Shimada’s new art in the book of the Philosopher and Poet, Dr. Paul Briot.  This book contains 6 original works of Saiso Shimada and original music created for each of these six works by a very famous musician Nakamura Masaki who fell in love with her paintings and meditated on the text of Dr. Paul Briot’s work Le Rayonnant.

Paul Briot Le Rayonnant, un art vers l'infini

Each of those original songs by Masaki Nakamura for Shimada’s paintings were created in meditation with Nathalie Ishizuka and Saiso Shimada.  They are accessible in a revolutionary new book edition, containing access to the works through your mobile (audio, visual and text) & QR codes written behind each painting.  To get this rare digital audio beautifully designed book you must order the book directly from the Editor as it is a limited edition.  The beautiful colored edition is rare and the paintings are in color.

As a result of the recent shift in her own work, Shimada is starting to teach her students Advanced Yoga Practices (Deep Meditation) with shodo.  Together with Nathalie Ishizuka they wish to make deep meditation and shodo available to those in Japan who practice traditional arts and those abroad.

SHODO AND MEDITATION A DAILY PRACTICE

To assist others in their pursuit of meditation and or shodo, Nathalie is making available a 10 minute meditation followed by a 5 Minute shodo Activity and 5 minute Rest Period with eyes closed (seated or lying down).  Should you be able to do this daily, both your meditation and shodo will improve.  The Total Practice is 20 minutes a day.

To develop a community we suggest that you use insight timer and in time a community may develop where our meditations and art together change both us and create greater beauty inside and outside Japan.

LESSON PLAN FOR SHODO AND MEDITATION PRACTICE:

Step 1: Create an intent.  For example, you could dedicate your 15 minute Practice to Greater Inner Silence and Joy within yourself and all others.

Step 2: Listen or Read the Directions for the Deep Meditation (Advanced Yoga Practices by Yogani) in Japanese, English or your language of choice

ENGLISH DIRECTIONS DEEP MEDITATION (AYP)  (www.advancedyogapractices.com)

“Once you have gotten comfortable, slowly close your eyes.
You will notice thoughts, streams of thoughts. That is fine. Just observe them without minding them.
After about a minute, gently introduce the thought  … I AM … and begin to repeat it easily and effortlessly in your mind. If your mind wanders off into other thoughts, you will eventually realize this has happened. Don’t be concerned about it. It is natural.
When you realize you are not repeating the mantra, gently go back to it.This is all you have to do.
Easily repeat the mantra silently inside.
When you realize you are not thinking it, then easily come back to it. The goal is not to stay on it. The goal is to follow the simple procedure of thinking the mantra, losing it, and coming back to it when you find you have lost it.  Do not resist if the mantra tends to become less distinct. Thinking the mantra does not have to be with clear pronunciation.
I AM can be experienced at many levels in your mind and nervous system. When you come back to it, come back to a level that is comfortable, not straining for either a clear or fuzzy pronunciation.”
Do this procedure for twenty minutes, and then, with your eyes closed, take a few minutes to rest before you get up.

JAPANESE DIRECTIONS (ADVANCED YOGA PRACTICES) AYP DEEP MEDITATION

Step 2: Set a timer (insight timer app is recemended) for 10 minutes.  Repeat the “AYAM” mantra “I AM” according to the instructions with eyes closed for 10 minutes.

Step 3: At the end of the 10 minutes, set the timer for a 5 minute rest (eyes closed seated or lying down) without using the mantra from the meditation.  Rest.  Sleep is good too.

Step 4: Play the 5 Minute video by Saiso Shimada and work along with her with a brush.  If you don’t have ink, just hold the brush and do the movements.

Step 5: Restate your Intent and celebrate it in your heart.  Gratitude for this moment.  Celebrate your moment of quiet, inner silence, joy or beauty.

Note:  If you enjoy this moment of calm, you can do it for 15 minutes in the evening.

Ideally, meditaiton when done twice a day begins to change our nervous system (every 5 or so hours our nervous system returns to its original state so meditating twice a day creates far greater benefits and is easier).

FULL DIRECTIONS FOR THE DEEP MEDITATION (ADVANCED YOGA PRACTICES) BY YOGANI ON WWW.ADVANCEDYOGAPRACTICES.COM

We suggest the 10 minute meditation for beginners and for those who wish to go further to work up to 20 minutes of meditation.  Do not do more than 20 minutes at a time as it is a very strong meditation.

For those interested in more information on this meditation and how to best practice it we highly suggest that you read Deep Meditation by Yogani.

Make sure you rest after the meditation as the benefits of the practice are often found in the rest period.  Should you not be resting enough, you may become irritable during the day, so make sure you self pace and listen to your body.  You should be feeling calm and more energized during the day — if not make your rest period a little longer.

SAISO SHIMADA:  A Rare Combination of Breath, Joy, Energy and Spirit

Saiso Shimada: Combines Breath, Energy, Joy and Spirit

saisoshimada.picBREATH

Combines profound knowledge of calligraphy with Zen & over 15 years of Kikou (Qigong).  Each stroke is anchored in breath.

It took Nathalie Ishizuka three years to find Saiso Shimada, but it was well worth the wait.

While many artists meditate, Shimada had her own unique style and life exuded from her art with an energy that surprises and heals.

“She uses breath in a way I have never seen before,” says Ishizuka.  Each stroke is advanced yoga, each breath channels energy on to the paper for us to enjoy for many many years ahead.

Energy

ENERGY

Shimada paints together the present and the future: a flow of energy that is Japan’s spirit pointed upwards like a samurai sword.  It is vertical as is the human spirit inciting Japan to move in a new direction and to focus on what is important.  The incision is not horizontal, but vertical.

A new transformation through art.  Since shodo ink captures energy on paper and can keep it for many many years, sitting in front of one of these paintings is a sure way to enfuse oneself with new life.

After one meditation of Shimada not being her body nor her mind, Shimada’s calligraphy changed as did the energy in the characters.  Sitting in front of that painting Ishizuka can still feel its energy.   It sits at my desk to enfuse me with its strength.

Snapseed 8JOY
The practice of Shimada’s writing itself is a healing experience as is sitting in front of one of her paintings.
Joy arises.
Spaciousness.
A place where time stops.
Behind each painting is a story, a place, an opening.
